Chapter 18: Sab

With Bea still upstairs, I focused on making tea. As much as I wanted to talk to her, I didn’t think she really wanted to deal with anyone, especially not Nate. Looking at him, the mixed emotions in his eyes, I was certain they both had things to work through. Bea was the daughter of the man who’d killed him. There was so much for both of them to work through.

West stepped over to join me. “Nate’s been struggling ever since he learned the other Ilona was one of the Cult who used her face.” He glanced over at him. “With everything that’s happened today, I think he’s probably going to need someone to keep an eye on him. Learning Bea’s Zero’s daughter…”

“He will not do anything to her.”

“No, he won’t, but he might leave. It’s something I thought he might do before. He is going down this rabbit hole of paranoia, one I’m certain Zero helped to create, and I don’t know how easy it will be for him to be around Bea now.”

Glancing at Nate once more, I nodded. “Thank you. Knowing helps, even if nothing happens. “Can you help hand out tea? The sooner it’s done, the better I think it will be for everyone.”

“Yes, that makes sense. Do you want to take one up to Bea?”

“For now, I think she’d rather be alone.” I picked up a couple of cups. “I’ll talk to Nate and see how he’s feeling.”

Stepping away from West, I placed the two cups down, one of them in front of Nate. “Do you want to talk about it?”

“When have I ever wanted to talk about it?”

“Almost never, unless you’re talking to Bea, but that doesn’t seem like a possibility right now. You know I’m here.”

“I do, and that doesn’t help.” He stared down into the cup, as though it held the answers to all his problems. “I want to talk to her. At the same time, I really don’t.” He shook his head. “The relationship we had… how can it ever be the same again?”

“You’re the only one who can answer that question, Nate, especially as I don’t think you’re asking it for the reason others might think. This isn’t about her being Zero’s daughter as much as it is about the fact she didn’t tell you she was safe four days ago. Keeping that from your broke your trust, something you’re already struggling with right now.”

He raised an eyebrow without looking at me. “I can only assume it was West who told you. The Cult has complicated everything, Sab. I don’t know who I can trust, if I can trust anyone, and Bea keeping that from me… who is she now?”

“Someone who’s coming to terms with her life changing once more, the way it keeps doing. Zero was the one who told her about the Cult, about you killing Pace, about what happened to me… and I think she’s questioning everything we’re doing. Our choice to remove the Exiled
